Wellness Travel in Brazil: 5 Destinations to Slow Down and Recharge
Not every trip has to be a race from one attraction to the next. More and more travelers are looking for the opposite: slower days, nature close by, and plenty of time to rest. That is wellness travel, and Brazil has no shortage of places to do it.
Embratur, Brazil's tourism promotion agency, dedicated the October 2026 issue of its Visit Brasil News bulletin to this theme. Here are the destinations it highlights, plus ideas for planning a calmer itinerary.
What is wellness travel
It is travel designed around taking care of yourself: time in nature, activities like yoga and meditation, spas and integrative therapies, good food, and above all a slower pace. You can build an entire trip around it or add a few days of rest to an itinerary that already mixes scenery and local culture.
5 destinations in Brazil to slow down
1. Bonito (Mato Grosso do Sul)
Crystal-clear rivers and quiet landscapes make Bonito a place where ecotourism and self-care meet. Spas and integrative therapies add calm moments to a stay, and a snorkeling float down the Rio da Prata, among fish and underwater gardens, completes the itinerary.
2. Jalapão (Tocantins)
In the fervedouros, natural spring pools, water pressure rising from below keeps swimmers floating amid the Cerrado landscape. Golden dunes, waterfalls, and starry nights add to the experience.
3. Chapada dos Veadeiros (Goiás)
Sound, silence, and movement are all part of the wellness experiences in Chapada dos Veadeiros. Massages, yoga, and meditation sit alongside waterfall swims in programs focused on personal balance and a connection with nature.
4. Penedo (Rio de Janeiro state)
In Itatiaia, Penedo offers sophisticated accommodation, spa facilities, and wellness programs, all set against a mountain climate.
5. Visconde de Mauá (Rio de Janeiro state)
In Resende, Visconde de Mauá is a natural partner to Penedo, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and traditional, locally prepared cuisine. The two destinations pair well in a single mountain itinerary.
Slow travel: stay longer in each place
Another growing trend is slow travel, which shares wellness tourism's emphasis on a gentler pace. Instead of passing through many places, you stay longer in each one and make the journey part of the experience.
In Brazil's natural parks, that means walks through lush surroundings, pauses to listen to nature, and time to take in the scenery. When planning, think about fewer transfers, longer stays, and room for rest.
How to plan a wellness trip
✔️ Choose fewer destinations. Two or three places, with stays of at least three nights, give you more than a rushed circuit.
✔️ Mix nature and rest. Alternate active days, such as waterfalls and trails, with free days for the spa, a book, or doing nothing.
✔️ Think about logistics. Many of these destinations are far from major cities and need a flight plus a transfer, so allow for that in your total travel time.
✔️ Check the best season. Rain and temperatures vary a lot from one region to another, and they affect waterfalls, rivers, and trails.
✔️ Book early. Hotels with spas and small guesthouses often sell out early in high season.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need many days for a wellness trip?
No. A long weekend in the mountains already helps you slow down, but itineraries of five days or more let you enjoy each place more fully.
Are these destinations good for families?
Many are, but the activities vary. Snorkeling, hiking, and waterfall swims have their own age and fitness requirements, so check before you book.
What is the best time to go?
It depends on the destination. In general, the dry season makes trails and river activities easier, while the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state are usually pleasant year-round. Confirm conditions for your dates.
Can I combine wellness with culture and food?
Yes. It is a great way to build a complete itinerary, with nature, local food, and time to rest.
