Everyone knows the Sugarloaf cable car — but few visitors realize you can hike up to the first peak, Morro da Urca, for free, through shady Atlantic rainforest, and enjoy one of Rio's best views without paying a cent. Here's everything you need to know.

Quick facts

How to get there

The trail starts at the Pista Cláudio Coutinho, a seaside path at Praia Vermelha in the Urca neighborhood. Take a taxi or rideshare to the cable car station or Praia Vermelha, then walk to the left end of the beach where the path begins. By bus, head to Praia Vermelha (UNIRIO stop). By metro, Botafogo is the nearest station — easiest combined with a short bus or rideshare.

What the trail is like

After a few minutes along the flat seaside path, you'll see the signed trailhead on your left. From there it climbs gently through forest, so you get plenty of welcome shade. The path is well marked and hard to lose, and you may spot native wildlife — marmosets, birds, the occasional lizard. It ends right at the Morro da Urca summit, where you join the cable-car park's viewing area. Take your time with the view — it's spectacular.

Important: the gate at the top of the trail closes at 17:00. Start by 16:00 at the latest, or you'll have to turn back without reaching the lookout.

Getting down: should you take the cable car?

Do you need a guide?

No — the trail is well marked and easy to follow on your own. That said, a local guide adds context, safety and the best photo angles, and many travelers prefer to go with someone — especially for an early start or as part of a bigger day.

Best time to go

Rio's best hiking months are the cooler, drier season, roughly May to October. Because Morro da Urca is shaded, it's doable in summer too. Most importantly, pick a clear, dry day — avoid going right after rain, when the forest path gets slippery, and choose blue skies for the best views.

FAQ

How long is the Morro da Urca trail? Most people take 40–60 minutes up, depending on pace. Is it safe? It's considered one of Rio's safest trails, as it sits within a monitored military area. Going in a group or with a guide adds peace of mind. Morro da Urca vs. Sugarloaf trail — what's the difference? Morro da Urca is the lower peak (easy, under 1h). The Sugarloaf summit trail is longer (~2h) and includes a climbing section — do that one only with an experienced guide.
